Our Commitment to Sustainability

Building a greener future through responsible sourcing, eco-friendly cups, and sustainable manufacturing practices

Sustainability Commitment

Our Environmental Vision

At Dixie, we believe that quality disposable products and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. Since 2010, we've invested over $45 million in sustainable manufacturing initiatives and forest stewardship programs.

Responsible Sourcing

100% of our paper-based disposable cups and plates are sourced from FSC certified forests, ensuring sustainable forest management and biodiversity protection.

Circular Economy

Our recyclable plates and compostable products are designed for end-of-life recovery, supporting circular economy principles and reducing landfill waste by 38% annually.

Clean Energy

Our Atlanta facility operates on 67% renewable energy as of Q4 2024, with plans to reach 90% by 2026 through solar panel installations and wind energy contracts.

Transparency Commitment: While our eco-friendly cups and sustainable disposable products deliver environmental benefits, we acknowledge current limitations:

  • Polyethylene coating on some cup products is not yet fully compostable in all municipal facilities (requires commercial composting)
  • Recycling infrastructure varies by region - check local guidelines for acceptance of coated paper products
  • PerfecTouch insulated cups require specialized recycling facilities due to multi-layer construction
FSC Certified Forests

FSC Certified Forest Stewardship

Since achieving FSC certification in 2012, Dixie has been a leader in responsible forest management, ensuring every FSC certified cup and plate supports sustainable forestry practices.

What FSC Certification Means:

  • Chain of Custody Verified: FSC-C123456 certification number tracks our paper from certified forests through manufacturing to final product
  • Biodiversity Protection: Partner forests maintain habitat corridors for 127 protected species including spotted owls and red-cockaded woodpeckers
  • Community Rights: FSC standards protect indigenous land rights and ensure fair wages for forestry workers in our supply chain
  • Reforestation Commitment: For every tree harvested, 3.2 seedlings are planted through our partnership with American Forests (verified by third-party audit in March 2024)

ISO 14001 Environmental Management

Our Atlanta production facility achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification in 2015 and has maintained compliance through 6 consecutive annual audits, demonstrating systematic environmental management across all operations.

Key Environmental Management Systems:

Closed-loop water recycling system installed in 2018 reduced freshwater consumption by 42% (from 8.3 million gallons to 4.8 million gallons annually).

  • Reverse osmosis filtration treats 85% of wastewater for reuse in cooling systems
  • Rainwater harvesting captures 120,000 gallons annually for non-potable use
  • Real-time monitoring sensors detect leaks within 15 minutes, preventing waste
Data source: Dixie Environmental Monitoring Report Q4 2024

VOC emissions from printing processes reduced by 68% through solvent recovery systems and water-based ink transition (2016-2024 period).

  • Continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) track particulate matter 24/7
  • Electrostatic precipitators capture 99.2% of airborne particles before stack release
  • Semi-annual air quality testing by independent lab (ALS Environmental) confirms EPA compliance

Zero-waste-to-landfill goal: Currently diverting 87% of manufacturing waste from landfills through recycling and energy recovery programs (target: 95% by 2026).

  • Paper trim waste is pulped and sold to insulation manufacturers (2,400 tons annually)
  • Polyethylene coating scrap converted to pellets for plastic lumber production
  • Comprehensive employee training program reduced contamination in recycling streams by 31%

Recyclable & Compostable Product Options

Expanding our portfolio of end-of-life solutions for sustainable disposable tableware

Recyclable Products

Dixie Recyclable Cups

Launched in September 2023, our recyclable cup line uses a water-based dispersion coating that separates during standard recycling processes.

  • Compatible with: Single-stream recycling programs that accept coated paper (check local guidelines)
  • Sizes available: 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, 20oz
  • Recycled content: 35% post-consumer recycled fiber

Recycling Limitation: Not accepted in all curbside programs. Verify acceptance with your local recycling provider. As of January 2025, accepted in 68% of U.S. municipalities based on Sustainable Packaging Coalition data.

Compostable Products

Dixie EcoSmart™ Plates

BPI-certified compostable plates made from sugarcane fiber (bagasse) and plant-based PLA coating. Breaks down completely within 90-120 days in commercial composting facilities.

  • Certification: ASTM D6400, BPI Compostable #10529384
  • Strength rating: Holds up to 3 lbs of food (tested)
  • Heat tolerance: Safe up to 200°F

Composting Requirement: Requires commercial composting facility - will not break down in home compost bins or landfills at expected rate. Only 4,700+ commercial facilities nationwide accept BPI-certified products (findacomposter.com).

Plant-Based Products

Dixie PLA Cold Cups

Made from polylactic acid (PLA) derived from renewable resources like corn starch. Ideal for cold beverages at events prioritizing sustainability.

  • Renewable content: 100% plant-based materials
  • Clarity: Crystal-clear for beverage visibility
  • Temperature limit: Cold drinks only (max 110°F)

End-of-Life Consideration: PLA requires industrial composting at 140°F+ to biodegrade. Not suitable for conventional recycling. Performance may vary based on beverage type and duration of use.
